Let’s get right to the point. The Mets can be (read: are) painful to watch. It’s one of the reasons they are so exciting. At this point in time, we can be reasonably sure that the 2011 Mets are not headed to the postseason. I’m as determined as people come, but recognizing when to cut your losses is as important as (or more so) than succeeding from the start.

The Mets are going nowhere in 2011. They’d owe Beltran $6.5M. He’d be gone as a free agent at the end of the year. To the detractors out there, why would you NOT pull the trigger on this trade to the Giants?! In this scenario, the Mets end up with the same result this season while saving about $2M (they did send some cash over), and acquiring a top-20 prospect (a starting pitcher at that).
